Brow Lamination: What It Is, How It Works, and Everything You Need to Know

What Is Brow Lamination?

Brow lamination is a semi-permanent eyebrow treatment that straightens and sets the brow hairs upward, creating fuller, more defined brows without filling, dyeing or tinting. The effect is a fluffy, brushed-up look — similar to a strong brow soap or styling gel, but lasting 4–8 weeks.

The treatment uses a chemical perming solution to break and re-set the bonds within each brow hair, letting the technician reposition the hairs before fixing them in place with a neutraliser.

What Does Brow Lamination Do?

  • Lifts flat or downward-growing hairs — hairs that lie flat or grow the wrong way are redirected upward and outward
  • Creates the illusion of fullness — spreading hairs across a wider area makes sparse brows look fuller
  • Adds definition without makeup — the brow shape is more visible and structured with no pencil, powder or tint
  • Tames unruly brows — overgrown or wiry hairs are smoothed and set

Brow Lamination vs. Microblading vs. Brow Tint

Treatment What it does Lasts Involves needles? Best for
Brow lamination Straightens and sets brow hairs 4–8 weeks No Fuller, fluffy brow shape
Microblading Implants pigment as hair-stroke tattoos 12–18 months Yes Sparse brows needing drawn-in hair
Brow tint Colours the brow hairs and skin 3–5 weeks No Blonde or grey brows needing colour
Brow lamination + tint Shape and colour combined 4–6 weeks No Most popular combination

How Is Brow Lamination Done?

  1. Cleanse and prep — the brow area is cleaned of oils and residue.
  2. Lifting solution — a perming cream (Solution 1) is applied to the brow hairs and left for 6–10 minutes to soften the hair structure.
  3. Brushing and shaping — while the solution is active, hairs are brushed into the desired position with a silicone or micro brush.
  4. Fixing solution — a neutraliser (Solution 2) locks the hairs into their new position for 6–10 minutes.
  5. Nourishing oil — a conditioning oil or serum restores moisture and closes the hair cuticle.
  6. Optional tint — a brow tint often follows lamination for a more defined look.
  7. Shape and define — excess hairs outside the brow shape are removed by waxing or threading.

How Long Does Brow Lamination Last?

Results typically last 4–8 weeks. The variation depends on hair type (fine hair fades faster than coarse), skincare routine (oil-based products and steam break the treatment down faster), and how closely aftercare is followed in the first 24–48 hours.

Brow Lamination Aftercare: What Not to Do

For the first 24–48 hours:

  • No swimming, saunas or steam rooms
  • No oil-based products over the brow area
  • Don't rub or touch the brows
  • Avoid heavy sweating
  • Sleep on your back to avoid pressing brows into a pillow

After 48 hours, apply a nourishing brow oil or serum daily to keep hairs conditioned and help the lamination last longer.

Who Is Brow Lamination Best For?

Brow lamination suits most people, but works especially well for naturally straight or downward-growing brow hairs, sparse brows wanting more visible hair without tattooing, and anyone who wants structured brows without daily makeup.

It's not recommended for very fine or damaged brow hairs, recent skin treatments in the brow area (laser, chemical peels), or active skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis on or around the brows.

How Much Does Brow Lamination Cost in Australia?

Brow lamination in Australian salons costs $60–$120, depending on whether tinting and shaping are included. Most salons offer a combined lamination and tint service for $80–$120; standalone lamination runs $60–$90.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does brow lamination hurt?

No. It's a non-invasive treatment with no needles or cutting. Most clients find it relaxing. Slight tingling from the chemical solutions is normal; sharp stinging or burning should be flagged to the technician immediately.

Can I get brow lamination if I have thin eyebrows?

Yes, but results depend on how much hair there is to work with. Lamination repositions and spreads existing hairs — it can't create new ones. Clients with very sparse brows may benefit more from combining lamination with tint and brow mapping.

How often can you get brow lamination?

Every 6–8 weeks is recommended. Laminating too often can dry out and weaken the brow hairs. Most clients book every 6 weeks and use nourishing brow oil daily in between.

Can you tint brows at the same time as lamination?

Yes, and most technicians recommend it. Tint is applied after the lamination solutions to colour both the brow hairs and the skin underneath for a more defined, filled-in look. It's the most popular brow service in Australian salons.

Is brow lamination safe for sensitive skin?

A patch test 24–48 hours before treatment is recommended for anyone with sensitive skin or a history of chemical reactions. The solutions contain similar ingredients to hair perming products, which can cause reactions in sensitive individuals.

What is the difference between brow lamination and brow soap?

Brow soap is a temporary styling product that holds hairs in place for the day. Brow lamination changes the direction hairs grow until they naturally shed and regrow. The look is similar, but lamination lasts weeks while soap washes off.
