Gel X Nails: What They Are, How They Work, and How They Compare to Acrylics

What Are Gel X Nails?

Gel X nails (also written as Gelx or Gel-X) are a nail extension system that uses soft gel to adhere pre-shaped, full-coverage nail tips to the natural nail plate. The system was developed by Aprés Nail and has become widely popular as a lighter, more flexible alternative to traditional acrylic nail extensions.

Unlike acrylics — which are built up from a liquid monomer and powder on a nail form — Gel X uses pre-made soft gel nail tips that are bonded to the natural nail using a builder gel base. The entire system is cured under an LED lamp and removed by soaking in acetone, similar to regular gel polish.

How Is Gel X Different from Acrylic?

Feature Gel X Acrylic
Material Soft gel Acrylic polymer + liquid monomer
Application Pre-shaped tips bonded with builder gel Hand-sculpted on nail forms
Smell during application None Strong chemical odour
Flexibility Medium (more flexible than acrylic) Low (rigid when set)
Removal Soak off in acetone File off / soak
Damage risk Low–Medium Medium–High
Custom sculpting Limited (tip shapes only) Full sculpt possible
Speed of application Fast (30–45 min) Slower (45–90 min)

How Is Gel X Applied?

  1. Prep the natural nail — push back cuticles, lightly buff the surface to remove shine, apply dehydrator and primer.
  2. Size the tips — choose the correct pre-made soft gel tip size for each finger from the Gel X tip box.
  3. Apply builder gel base — a thin layer of Aprés Extend Gel (or equivalent builder gel) is brushed inside the tip and on the natural nail plate.
  4. Press and cure — the tip is pressed onto the nail at the correct angle and cured under an LED lamp for 60 seconds. This bonds the tip permanently to the nail.
  5. Shape and file — the extended tip is filed to the desired nail shape (square, almond, coffin, etc.).
  6. Colour and top coat — gel polish and top coat are applied over the extension and cured.

How Long Do Gel X Nails Last?

Gel X extensions typically last 3–5 weeks before a fill or removal is needed. The longevity depends on how fast the natural nail grows, how well the nails were prepped at application, and daily wear. Most clients book a 3-week infill appointment to keep the look neat as the natural nail grows out.

How Are Gel X Nails Removed?

Gel X is removed by soaking in acetone for 15–20 minutes, similar to regular gel polish removal. The soft gel breaks down completely in acetone without aggressive filing. This makes Gel X significantly less damaging on removal than hard gel or poorly-removed acrylic extensions.

Who Are Gel X Nails Best For?

Gel X suits clients who want extensions without the smell, rigidity, or filing-intensive removal of acrylics. It is a good choice for clients who have previously had nail damage from acrylic removal, those who want a more natural-feeling extension, and anyone who prefers a faster appointment.

It is less suitable for clients who want heavily hand-sculpted shapes, extreme length that the pre-made tips cannot achieve, or any design work that requires a very hard substrate.

Can You Learn Gel X as a Nail Technician?

Yes. Gel X (and soft gel extension systems generally) is covered in professional nail training as part of the gel extensions module. If you are considering a career as a nail technician, our nail technology course covers gel extension application, tip sizing, shaping, and removal alongside core gel and acrylic skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Gel X nails the same as gel nails?

No. Standard gel nails (gel polish) are applied directly on the natural nail to add colour and shine but no significant length or structure. Gel X is a nail extension system — it uses pre-made gel tips to add length, then gel polish is applied on top for colour. Both use gel products and LED curing, but they serve different purposes.

Can Gel X be done at home?

Gel X kits are available for home use, but professional results require proper nail prep, correct tip sizing, and curing technique. Incorrect application leads to lifting, breakage, or trapped moisture under the tip, which can cause nail damage or bacterial growth. Home kits are best approached as a learning exercise rather than a replacement for a professional application.

Do Gel X nails damage natural nails?

When applied and removed correctly, Gel X causes minimal damage to the natural nail. The main risk is aggressive filing during prep or picking and peeling the extension rather than soaking. Both of these remove layers of the natural nail plate.

How much do Gel X nails cost in Australia?

A full Gel X set in Australia costs $80–$150 depending on the salon, location, and length. Infills are generally $60–$100. Gel X tends to be priced similarly to or slightly above acrylic extensions at most Australian salons.

Can you put nail art on Gel X?

Yes. Gel X extensions provide an ideal canvas for nail art because the surface is smooth, consistent, and can be filed to any shape. Gel paint, foil, chrome powder, and 3D art all adhere well to a cured Gel X surface.
